The adventure begins!

Hello my fellow bloggers,

First of all I would like to introduce myself. So, my name is Frank Vercammen and I am a master student industrial engineer with a focus on medical bio-engineering at GroupT, KU Leuven Belgium. As you all know, master students are obliged to write a thesis and accompanied to this thesis, at our school, we also set up a blog. This blog will allow us to expand our area of interest and show it to the world!

As a brief introduction, my thesis will continue at IDT (stands for Integrated DNA Technology), which is the number one company where short synthetic strands of DNA, called oligonucleotides, are produced and shipped worldwide towards scientific researchers. My thesis’ subject will be about the automation of the large scale production unit. Having this said, time to explore the world of synthetic biology!

With DNA the information carrier of all life processes, the link between synthetic strands of DNA and synthetic biology is easily made. On this blog I will try to find an answer on how far scientists already are on creating life, the future prospects of this research as well as the associated ethical questions that arise.

Thanks in advance for ending up on my blog and stay tuned for the real fascinating post still coming!
